Can anyone tell me why Linux identifies scsi tape drives as /dev/st0,
/dev/st1, .... where the last digit is the tape drive number (e.g. first
drive, second drive, etc.), and how does this relate to the actual scsi
identifier, which is also the device minor number? At best this is a
confusing situation. For example, access to a tape drive is through
/dev/st0, even if your tape drive is number 4 on the scsi chain.
Also, RedHat Linux (5.1 installation manual) references the file
/etc/sysconfig/tape. I can't see how, or even if, this file is ever used.
Can anyone enlighten me?
Finally, I have an Adaptec 2940UW scsi host adaptor card in an Intel box.
During the boot up (prior to lilo boot), after the scsi device (a tape
drive) is identified, the message "SCSI BIOS not installed" appears. While
there seems to be no immediate consequence of this, and I do have the BIOS
enabled in the Adaptec control panel, the SCSI-HOWTO seems to imply that I
should have the BIOS installed. Yet, I can see no way to install this BIOS;
I don't even know where it is found. Any enlightenment?
thanks,
