Ok, first I'll just let everyone know we'll go ahead and take this to
e-mail or to a more relevant list after this, but if anyone else is having
similar problems or questions be sure to mail me. That said...
Couple of questions... What Distribution are you using? I'm afraid I'm not
as familiar with different distributions as I should be. It looks like the
packages he told you you may need are all supplements to the distribution
and not supplements to the kernel. Kernel modules are all in the kernel
tar you downloaded. All you're doing is compiling the source as a module
instead. I'm not sure why syslog was complaining, check and be sure you
have a /dev/log, that it's rw, check the man page for any more on that.
You will need modutils, which is why modprobe failed. I have no idea what
the latest version is... It's possible they haven't kept up with the latest
kernel since we've been seeing 2-3 a week lately. I'd suggest finding a
recently new set of binaries and using them. RedHat will probably have an
rpm in their ftp directories.
See what works... mail me your results, we probably should keep of the list
now though.
