Hi. I've just installed linux on a friends machine, that previously
hosted unixware. There seems to be a problem with the aha1542b in the
machine. Upon boot the kernel prints this message once:

  aha1542_detect: failed setting up mailboxes

then continues to boot as if nothing had happened. There are no
helpful comments in the kernel source where this is printed. There is
no help in the scsi howto.

Once linux is booted it seems normal except at big disk accesses, like
starting emacs, X and such, when it will seem to hang while the
diskaccess happens, unlike what I'm used to with my own aha1542 which
freezes nothing while accessing the disk/tape..., also it seems slower
than it should.

I assume that this is related to the mailbox problem. I've looked at
the aha1542b config/strap tables, nothing seems to have anything to do
with mailboxes.

The aha1542 is the only disk controller in the machine, and there is
one disk and one cd-rom on the very short cable which is, as far as I
can tell terminated according to specs.

Any theories? Sugestions?

Much obliged,
  Nicolai
