Hi, I have the problem that when I am using my SCSI tape streamer for
example for backup and indulge in unrelated disk activities like
logging in to a second console, my SCSI system locks up. This means
that the BUSY LED of the Adaptec 1542CF will be permanently lit, and
on the log there will be messages appearing like "SCSI timeout,
resetting device 0". Then the controller will go on repeatedly
resetting device 0 (the disk) although most probably the device
locking the BUS will be the tape drive (3). So one thing I'd recommend as
a last resort when resetting the device to be used a few times does not
help, then to reset the entire SCSI bus. It might be of interest that
the Adaptec BUSY LED did not come off even after pressing RESET on the
computer until the Adaptec BIOS got started again in the course of the
boot process.
My configuration currently is:
/proc/version:
Linux version 2.0.32 (root@stan.goethe.de) (gcc version 2.7.2.3) #5
Son Mär 22 13:01:42 CET 1998
/proc/scsi/scsi:

aha1542 and SCSI disk support are built into the kernel fixedly, SCSI
tape support as module. Compiling SCSI tape support in fixedly did
not help, either. Even in single user mode with file system mounted
R/O did
tar cf /dev/nst0 /home & find /home -name xxx
hang the system within 1 minute. The last error message
is something like
aha1542_out: cannot ??? (2)
^ don't remember exactly what this was, but I'm
sure about the (2).
This has worked before (but don't ask me what kernel version I last
tried to use this tape drive with). Will upgrading the kernel to the
newest stable version probably help? 2.0.32 should be rather recent
and rather stable, but perhaps something relevant has been changed,
still?
