I have one of those BusLogic boards in a similar configuration (RedHat 5). 
You do not need to change the kernel.  Make sure that the SCSI bus is
properly terminated and that the ID on the drive(s) is/are properly set to
nonconflicting addresses.  That board has a setup BIOS screen (Control-B
on boot).  Go in there and ask it to scan the SCSI bus.  If you don't see
all your devices, you have a hardware problem (ie. cabling, termination or
ID) that must be solved first.  --jw
