Okay, I orginally joined this list a few months ago trying to get my
CD-ROM drive to work. Still no luck with that. At the time of my
posting the general consenus was that the drive wasn't going to work.
To refresh memories: It is a NEC-210, connected externally to a PAS-16
sound card. I also have an Adaptec 1542 in the machine controlling two
of my hard drives, I also have 1 IDE drive controlled by the
motherboard.
The problem basicly is when I mount the drive the computer hangs, then a
few minutes later I get about 2 screens full of error text. But during
boot the controller and drive are seen just fine. I say the second part
because under kernels 1.2 the machine would hang as soon as it saw the
drive. Other facts, works find under DOS/Win95, but hangs the machine
for about 5-15 (never timed it) minutes when booting NT, but works fine
after that.
So if no one has anymore ideas (I'll post the errors again, if it'll
help any, I don't think it did last time), I'll take a recommendation as
to a cheap 2-4x CD-ROM drive that is known to work with the PAS-16
controller. I just found it odd that this one didn't, cause it was
shipped built into the external module of the Media Vision ProAudio
Spectrum 16 Memphis (the Memphis is a special version of the PAS16 that
has an external box that had speakers, MIDI, RCA audio jacks, and the
CD-ROM drive). Oh one odd thing about the memphis is the external box
thing has a 38(?)-pin connector that sends all the data (audio, midi,
scsi) to the box through one cable.
Thanks one more time,
-Chris
