Have you tried telling Linux about the host adapter with a command line
message (via LILO) rather than by probing?  With probing, it searches for
the driver ROM and the one on the card is undoubtedly too old to recognize.
The drivers for the 154xA and 154xB are identical, and I have had no
problem with one box that has an AHA-1542B.  I do use Slackware rather than
RedHat, but this is a kernel issue so that should not matter.  See the SCSI
HOWTO for details of passing a suitable message with LILO.  Old Adaptecs
never die; they don't even fade away.
