Hi Daniel,
thanks for Your reply.

It took a bit of time to answer, sorry. We are just preparing some scientific
project which is - as usual - quite urgent.

Concerning the SCSI problem:

Now, this is spit out w/ the verbose mode of the aic7xxx driver w/ the:

A) original hardware cable connections:
(CD-rom is the last device connected to the cable)

...
aic7xxx: <Adaptec AHA-294X Ultra SCSI host adapter> at PCI 12
aic7xxx: Loading serial EEPROM...done
aic7xxx: Warning - detected auto-termination. Please verify driver
detected settings and use manual termination if necessary.
aic7xxx: Cables present (Int-50 YES, Int-68 NO, Ext-68 NO)
aic7xxx: eprom is present, brdctl_int=0xac, brdctl_ext=0xec
aic7xxx: Termination (Low ON, High ON)
aic7xxx: BIOS enabled, IO Port 0xe000, IO Mem 0xfa000000, IRQ 12, Revision B
aic7xxx: Extended translation enabled.
aic7xxx: Wide Channel, SCSI ID 7, 16/255 SCBs, QFull 16, QMask 0x1f
aic7xxx: Resetting channel A
aic7xxx: Downloading sequencer code... 414 instructions downloaded
scsi0 : Adaptec AHA274x/284x/294x (EISA/VLB/PCI-Fast SCSI) 4.1/3.2
scsi : 1 host.
...

B) with the CD-Rom connected as the first device in the cable and a HD as the
last one:

...
 aic7xxx: <Adaptec AHA-294X Ultra SCSI host adapter> at PCI 12
 aic7xxx: Loading serial EEPROM...done
aic7xxx: Warning - detected auto-termination. Please verify driver
detected settings and use manual termination if necessary.
 aic7xxx: Cables present (Int-50 YES, Int-68 NO, Ext-68 NO)
 aic7xxx: eprom is present, brdctl_int=0xac, brdctl_ext=0xec
aic7xxx: Termination (Low ON, High ON)
aic7xxx: BIOS enabled, IO Port 0xe000, IO Mem 0xfa000000, IRQ 12, Revision B
 aic7xxx: Extended translation enabled.
 aic7xxx: Wide Channel, SCSI ID 7, 16/255 SCBs, QFull 16, QMask 0x1f
 aic7xxx: Resetting channel A
aic7xxx: Downloading sequencer code... 414 instructions downloaded
 scsi0 : Adaptec AHA274x/284x/294x (EISA/VLB/PCI-Fast SCSI) 4.1/3.2
 scsi : 1 host.
...

===> seems to be the same.

In my previous mail I mentioned shortly that we have two computer w/ little
differing hardware. One has the CD-rom and two 4.3GB Quantuum Harddisks, the
other has an additional Seagate 1GB disk and a Yamaha 400t CD-writer device w/
external cable. The problem with the CD-roms are the same on both computers.

Maybe, but:
The Toshiba CD-roms are the only devices which caused problems under the
described special circumstances (`dd` and `mount` commands). All other disks
never caused noticable problems. I *can* execute exactly the same commands
successfully simply by using the Yamahe 400t device instead of the Toshiba
cd-rom device. And this happens independently of the two cable settings.
Therefore I thought that the problem is related to the Toshiba CD-rom ...

Cheers, Roger
