Well lemme give a short answer, although I'm only related to the aha174x.

Most probably there is a way to enable such output in the 2940 driver with
some preprocessor statement. The same is (I know that) true for the scsi tape
driver (st.c). You'll also probably find info (with email address) in there
who wrote the driver. so you might connect to this person directly.

In all cases you will have to recompile the kernel. Actually I think the
2940 driver is still under ALPHA development and not in the official kernel.
If I'm not wrong on that you'll find location where to get the last 
version (as well as how to contact the author) in the file "SCSI-Howto" on
a linux ftp server close to you.

The author might also be able to guide you where to place additional printk's
to further localize the problem.
