I'm installing a new and larger hard drive (4.3GB) in my Linux box--in
addition to the existing hd (550MB).

This is something that I couldn't locate in the HowTos or other
resources, and although I did find one piece of
info, I am having trouble understanding it (see below).

Vital Stats
Box: HP Vectra XU 5/90 w/ onboard controller running Vanderbilt
Existing Drive: 550MB Quantum Lightning 540S 241E, scsi id 0
New Drive: 4.1GB Quantum Fireball ST4.3S 0F0C, scsi id 5.

I physically installed the new drive without any problems. It was
recognized at
boot, and I partitioned it easily. But when I ran mke2fs, it crashed.
It got through the bad block-check and inode table-build OK, but then
it hung for a few seconds and I got the message: "scsi: aborting
command due to timeout: pid 16811 scsi0 chan0 id0 lun0. Write (6) 01
c0 32 02 00" and then "scsi0: AM53C974_abort called --- trouble
starts! AM53C974 register dump....." (or something to that effect).

After reading README.AM53C974 in /usr/src/linux/drivers/scsi and after
speaking with Quantum, I found that I needed to pass the parameters for
transfer rate at 20, but I didn't know what sync. offset to pass so I
tried both 0 and 15. Passing AM53C974=7, 5, 20, 15 at LILO, I was able
to successfully run mke2fs. But then I rebooted and passed the same
parameters again, but this time I got the same abort error when I tried
to write to the new filesystem! (Arrrrgh!)

Does anyone know if I simply need to upgrade my kernel to 2.0.30? Or do
I need to go so far as to disabling the on-board SCSI controller and
install a new one? (I have a FlashPoint LT from Mylex all set to go,
but I'd rather not install it if I can avoid it...)

TIA!
Mike
