I have had a similar problem, only it was with my hp-6020i cd writer. It
would do things similar to what you were talking about. I called tech
support, and he said it might be that my writer wasn't getting enough
power to it, I unplugged my old tape drive, and sure enough it worked
fine after that. I don't know if this will help you though, I had 6
different drives running off of one 200W power supply.
