in the meantime I've learned a bit more about the problem. It seems to
be a multi-way incompatibility involving the Epox motherboard, Linux,
and the tape drive/scsi card combo. To sum it up,
DAT drive and SCSI card hardware are OK
Epox/K6/233 + Linux + scanner = OK
GVT/486/66 + Linux + tape = OK
AST/486/33 + Linux + tape = OK
Epox/K6/233 + DOS + tape = OK
Epox/K6/233 + Linux + tape = No good.
