I'm using Yamaha CDR400tx, AHA2940uw on kernel v2.1.56 without any
problems. That was true even for some alpha version of the cdrecord,
and for 2.0.30-pre-2, but Davem's "pre" version (before he quit :)).

Since v2.1.56 is really stable and featurefull, maybe you could
consider switching to it and see if your problems are gone.
