That rumor is pointing at the 1542C series which has been replaced by
the CF one soon after the weaknesses became known (and the word spread
really fast).

It's a strange phemomenon, I must admit. Here in Germany it's nearly
impossible to get other SCSI controllers besides Adaptec. NCR/SymBios
is possible if you ask often enough, but nobody has ever heard of
Advansys,BusLogic, or other manufacturers (and Future Domain is out of
business, I think).
Wherever possible, I try to avoid buying Adaptec 294x.
