Your problem is almost certainly due to the fact you didn't get the
disk inserted properly (it is extremely difficult).   Is the green
light glowing on the outside?  If it isn't, you haven't inserted the
disk properly.  *Very gently* reseat the disk after insertion until
you see the light start flashing yellow (the flashing will stop after
awhile and the LED will glow green).  Be gentle, but persistent.

Pretty much.  I've had a couple of Syjet related crashes (I was
accessing the Syjet when the system went west without any logged
messages in the syslogs), but for the most part they work O.K.  I've
been able to compile all of XFree86-3.3 on a Syjet.

Things might be working better in 2.0.31pre.  I haven't had a
Syquest-related crash in awhile, but I've been pushing it less hard
also.
