I had a problem like this it is due to an error in libc's llseek()
Try useing a precompiled binary/ upgrading your libc or compiling again
but undef have llseek in the mke2fs config
hope this helps

     would format a 2 gig partition without any error, including the strange
     page error, but, more than two gigs and the page error would occur,
     anything beyond four gigs and a "Bus Error" would occur and mke2fs would
     exit. If anyone has an idea of where the problem might be occuring please
     let me know, thanks.
