Weird problems with SCSI drive on boot...

I'm having difficulty with a Quantum Fireball SCSI drive. I've got two
machines, both with Adaptec 2940's (older ones: no ultra or wide
features). When I boot off the drive on the one, everything works just
dandy. When I boot off the drive on the other, I get the initail LILO
message, asking me which kernel I'd like to boot from, and I can select
the kernel, but when it goes to load the kernel, all that is displayed
is the kernel name, and then I get total SCSI lockup (the light on the
2940 stays on).

I've tried swapping cards, cables, & terminating devices between the two
systems. I've also tried putting a different boot drive in the failing
system.... and it WORKED! When I tried to mount the flaky drive, the
system locked up again.

Any ideas?
