Has anyone had any luck installing Linux on a Data General AViiON AV1600
server? Looking at the specs, I think it should all be supported, unless
it does something silly with the BIOS like the Compaq DeskPro does.
The basic specs are:
200MHz Pentium Pro, 256K L2 cache
64-bit non-interleaved ECC memory (via 4 onboard DIMM connectors)
Adaptec 7880 Ultra Wide SCSI PCI controller
Cirrus Logic 54M40 1MB PCI SVGA graphics card
Intel 82557 10/100TX PCI ethernet card
PS/2 compatible mouse and keyboard connectors
The SCSI-HOWTO doesn't acknowledge the existence of an Adaptec 7880, but
the README.aic7xxx file seems to indicate that Adaptec card usually use
AIC chipsets, and that there is an AIC-788x chipset, which is supported.
The Ethernet-HOWTO implies that anything based on the i82557 should work.
The XFree86-HOWTO says the 5440 is supported. Does anyone know if the
54M40 is significantly differrent?
If this machine is going to work with Linux, it should prove to be quite
a decent little system. However, it's approaching decision time, and it's
either the AV1600, or a bog standard P166 PC (which is obviously cheaper,
but the AV1600 is potentially a much nicer machine).
Thanks,
Tet
