After several email about the problems some people are having with
bad sector causing kernel panics I decided to spend a few hours
looking into the problem.
The result is a small program which allows the diagnosis of a
removable SCSI disk to determine the number of sectors which have
been relocated. Normally the ZIP drive will silently relocate sectors
until the spares are used. More spares can be obtained by performing
a media format (Iomega have hidden away an additional 1,500+ sectors
per surface for long term media stability).

PS:
In theory this program can be used for other SCSI removable disk
drives but I don't have access to a SCSI-II spec to confirm some
assumptions. Still needs a polish...
