Thanks Dirk, but "If only it was that easy ..." ;o)

Ok, I tried that. It didn't work:

1) Tried this first: aic7xxx=extended aic7xxx=ultra
2) Tried this next: aic7xxx=extended,ultra
3) Tried this third: aic7xxx=ultra,extended ;o)
4) Tried this last: aic7xxx=ultra (sacrificing
my 'extended translation' for 'ultra' ...)

... and now to something surprising:

1) Upon boot, the bios recognizes the cards (both ...) as AIC 7850
revision 1.19S6. "This is what I paid for (in ultra-versions ...)"
2) Linux' aic7xxx-driver recognizes the cards (both ...) as AIC 7855
PCI. "Can't force it to think otherwise ..."
3) The Hewlett Packard supplied software recognizes the cards (both ...)
as AIC 7870. "Don't ask me why ..."

Is there any switch (at boottime) I can set, so that the kernel is led
to believe that it has to deal with:

              two AIC 7850 ULTRA cards???

Thanks for any help ...
