general problems with syquest 270MB drive

Hi!
My syquest drive 270MB/rev. 3.14 doesn't work proper with linux. Again
and again I get bad blocks with different cartridges. My vendor has
exchanged the drive 2 times but the problems remain. When low-level
formating a cartridge with adaptec's 2940W firmware I sometimes get a
"medium error" sensekey 3h, sensecode 32h and formating is aborted.
Does anyone have a solution?
My environment:
Linux v2.1.43 SMP dual pentium 200MMX
Adaptec 2940W scsi controller
2 QUANTUM XP34550W disks
1 SyQuest SQ3270S (external box)
1 HP C1533A (external box)
