Have you tried a different disk drive? The Quantum Fireball ranks in
our book as one of the least reliable disk drives of all time. It's
up there with the Maxtor MXT-540S, the famous 1GB Connor drive with
the SCSI firmware bugs, and the Micropolis 4GB AV drives (whose part
number escapes me at the moment).
We consistely saw SCSI bus errors, data curruption, and other
reliability problems with the Fireballs. Ever wonder why the Fireball
is so cheap? My feeling is that this drive had SCSI firmware bugs.
