Our benchmarks with the 53C875 (specifically the Symbios SYM8751SP)
show that it gets about 10% better performance than the Adaptec and
slightly better than the Buslogic. The Buslogic's performance in our
benchmarks was very dependent on file system size, falling off
dramatically as the partition size was increased from 2GB to 9GB. We
use iozone and bonnie for benchmark testing, and filesystems were all
ext2 using the defaults.
So the 53C875 chip is a great value.
However, a new release of the Adaptec drivers should appear soon which
will likely have impreoved performance. We are testing it now.
The Buslogic driver has been extremely stable and well supported for a
long time now. All of the standard distributions install out of the
box on Buslogic.
The 53C875 requires you to upgrade the driver in kernels prior to
2.0.31, and get special install disks for Slackware or Red Hat because
neither comes with the new 53C875 driver. (Kernel 2.0.31 is not
available yet, but will include the new 53C8xx driver.) Kernel
sources and binaries with the new 53c8xx driver and Red Hat and
Slackware boot disks are available from ftp.varesearch.com.
