I had a similar problem when I followed the mini-howto which said to not
use the Advansys card which came with the 4020i. My system would lock up
my Adaptec 1542b controller with the 4020i on it.

(And I do know about the terminators, term-power, IDs, etc.)

I did not enable the write mode as I did not need any more
frizbees. They may terrible coasters. The water just rolls off. Now,
diskettes . . . that is a different matter. :)

The solution, for me, was to use the Advansys card. Once I put it in,
and ONLY put the 4020i on the card, disabled the reconnect for the
target ID (2), rebuilt the kernel with Advansys support, did things work
very well. In fact, I turned off most of the options for the Advansys
card. The bus had only the two devices so supporting reconnect or burst
mode did not make that much of a difference.

You need to run Advansys' card configuration utility under MSDOS to do
this. Once you update the flash code on the card then you don't need the
utility again.

I leave the 1542 to run the disk and tape drives.

(I had no trouble after I got the 'sg' devices correct. The first
attempt totally wiped my primary SCSI hard drive as I attempted to
write the CDROM to the wrong SCSI device, my hard drive, and it
obligingly destroyed the partition table faster than I could hit the
reset button on the computer. -- Oh well, it was time to upgrade to ELF
at that time anyway.)

I have made many CDROMs on my system after that.
