I had the same problems. Get the latest ext2-tools (0.5b I think).
They can make filesystems larger than 2 GB. I used
cfdisk for partitioning. Both fdisk and cfdisk cannot handle an
extended partition that starts beyond 2 GB, so watch out!
I assume that this is because these tools don't use llseek() as
does mke2fs or e2fsck.
