Using an 8505XL without any problems here, with dd, rmt, tar, bru and
others.

I'm not setting the blocksizes at all.

Exabyte does have a document dealing specifically using Linux with their
products.  I suggest you mail stephani@Exabyte.COM and request a copy - it
might help you out.
