Hi All,

For those who might think 'I've seen this before': you're right. And you'll
se it again and again when you don't provide me with THE solution :-)))

I have an Exabyte 8200 8mm-tapedevice, connected as SCSI-id 1 at a Future
Domain TMC8xx SCSI-card, together with a 1.3GB SCSI-disk which is id 0.
This stuf is inside a 486/33 with 16MB running kernel 2.0.27 which is
compiled with SCSI support which I boot with the following kernel-parameter:
tmc8xx=0xca000,5

The 8mm is not detected at boot in about 50% of the cases.
Yes, I tried with and without tape in it. Yes, I tried a brandnew tape. Yes,
the heads are clean.
In the cases that it is recognised, I'm not able to use the 8mm properly.
With 'tar cvf ...' the led is flashing and the tape is moving. But with
'tar xvf....' I get the message "Hmmm, this seems not to be a tar-archive.
Skipping to next header'. I have tried a 'new' mt-program which was given to
me. 'mt -f /dev/rst0 setdensity 0' and then 'tar' .... :-((
Also 'dd' seems to write something to the tape, but when dd'ing from the tape
I get crap... Yes, I have played with different block-sizes.

I was also advised to give 'tar' the '0l' option. I did so and got the message
"The version of *this* tar does not support that option"
At the risk of being decaptivated, the 8mm runs perfectly well under Win95 and
Dos.

1: Does anyone have real good ideas to get this configuration to work???
2: Does anyone exist with a correct working Exabyte 8200 under Linux 2.0.x???

I you have any comments like 'try to re-compile [xyz] with the option [abc]',
please give me the location of the sourcecode as well as the complete command
to compile. (I do not have any compiler experience other than running 'make')

I promise I will format my Win95 partition when my tape works under Linux...:-)

Vriendelijke groeten/Best regards,
