Hi,

Im not sure which list is better for this problem.

Im using a Linux 1.2.3 on a

	AMD 486DX4-100
	ASUS PVI-486SP3 mother board
	NCR53C810 SCSI controller

The system is about 1.5 years old.

I used only SCSI drives and had no problems.

A few days ago I bought a 2 GB quantum fireball IDE disk.

After enabling the onboard IDE controller and autodetection of the HD
(CHS=1023,64,63 LBA mode) LILO is not longer able to boot.

Only LI appears and the system hangs.

OK, I booted with a kernel from a boot disk. I can imagine that the BIOS can
have problems to boot from the SCSI disks after adding an IDE drive.

My main problem is the following:

I called fdisk to make 3 partitions. Each about 1GB + about 50MB swap. I
called mke2fs for both partitions and mounted them. -- worked.

When I'm calling a

find / -xdev -print | cpio -pudvm /usr2

after a short time, the kernel gives a panic.

/usr2 is the first partition on the IDE disk.

Then I tried to supply the parameter

	hd=4092,16,63

to the kernel, made new partitions and mke2fs and the same happens.

I tried to make four partitions (3*600MB + swap).

I tried to setup LILO to boot a kernel from hda1 (I'm able to copy small
files without panic) but LILO hangs after 'LI'.

I supplied disk entries in my lilo.conf and the option 'linear' too. The
disk entry contains the values: 4092,16,63.

I gave LILO on a bootdisk and the same happened????

I tried 'large mode' and 'normal mode' but with greater problems.

What I'm doing wrong?

I anybody running linux on a similar configuration?

Is it possible that I should use a newer kernel?

I guess that the LI problem and the panic have the same reason (LBA, disk
geometry).

Is there a conflict between my SCSI and the IDE disk?

Can anybody give me pointers or an idea what I can try?

Thanks in advance

Helmut
