After consulting the docs (ie FAQs) of Slackware Pro 2.1
there still is no solution to my problem of connecting a CD-ROM to my 486.
I would appreciate helpfull comments.
Specification:
- Slackware Professional Linux 2.1
- 486DX2/66; VLB (Unibus-486WB)
- VGA: WD90C33
- VLS-6360 SCSI controller
("fully Adaptec 1522a compatible in HW/SW";
"recognizes ANSI SCSI and SCSI-II command set")
- Sun CD-ROM (Sony CDU-8012 3.1a; sector size 512)
Problem description:
After boot via boot/root disks, mounting the CD-ROM fails:
mount -t iso9660 -o ro /dev/cdrom /mnt
The symptoms are that the green LED on the player lights up immediately
when the mount command has been issued. A few minutes (1 or 2) of a
hanging mount command command (ie. nothing happens). The green LED
on the player lights up again and the mount command returns with
the general error message (approx.):
"Mount failed: wrong fs type or bla bla bla or any other error".
I have tested the CD-ROM on another system:
- Linux 1.0
- 486DX2/66 Tulip
- Adaptec 1542 SCSI controller
Everything works ok on this configuration. I used the same cables and terminator.
I also tried the Apple CD300 (Sony-8002 1.8g) but that one does not seem to be
recognized by the Linux kernel (using the "scsi" image of Slackware) at all.
--> did someone work on making this CD-ROM usable in a Linux environment? <--
(I cannot give the exact error messages as the text scrolls off my screen :().
SCSI controller settings (default):
- IO port: 0x340-0x35F
- SCSI BIOS enabled
- BIOS address: 0xDC000, 0xD8000, 0xCC000, 0xC8000 (I tried all of them :()
- IRQ 11
- Floptical/SCSI floppy feature bit OFF
- HD>1 Gb or Floptical/SCSI floppy support OFF
- All internal terminators removed; Internal HD is also on SCSI controller
External terminator on CD-ROM;
SCSI-Id's are set ok: 0 for HD, 1 for CD-ROM, 7 for controller. (Adaptec's
SCSI utilities recognize them also in WfW311)
I would appreciate any help.
