I have the same with kernels after 1.1.76. 1.1.76 itself still did
access the sg device of the CDROM properly with cdda2wav.

By the way, yesterday my ext2fs filesystem was ruined when I used
cdda2wav on /dev/sr0 (using ioctl interface). I got constant SCSI
timeouts and other error messages. After about 5 minutes these stopped
and everything appeared normal again.

But after a reboot, it appeared that some blocks were in more than one
file, some files therefore contained trash and some files were lost.
