Well, signals are reflected at ends of the bus that are not terminated properly.
So the signals and their echoes interfere and the signal quality gets worse.
It depends on many factors whether it gets bad enough to actually cause
immediate failure.

The last device on each end of the bus has to be terminated.
That means that the last internal drive, which should be at the last connector
of the cable, and the last external one get terminated.
