Hi,
I've had an HP ScanJet IIP for about 30 months which I use exclusively for
OCR under DOS. I'm blind, and got the scanner as part of a specialist
package which included a derivative of OmniPage. When I tried to find out
more technical info about my setup, I found that the people who sold me
the stuff are absolutely clueless :-(.
Anyway, I think my card is an NCR5380 (I'm sure I remember someone
reading that much to me from some documentation ages ago ...). The DOS
driver comes up saying "IRQ=00, DMA=no", and I know I didn't have to
exclude a chunk of memory from use by the DOS memory managers, so I
presume it must be port-mapped. Does that sound reasonable?
OK, I've been trying the g_NCR5380 driver under Linux 2.0.17/2.0.26, with
awful results - my system locks up completely as soon as I insmod the
module, or boot the machine with a kernel including that driver. I
wondered if this might be an IRQ clash or something, so tried
# insmod g_NCR5380 ncr_irq=255 ncr_dma=255 ncr_addr=0x350 ncr_5380=1
with similar results - a hang.
OK, admittedly I'm feeling my way in the dark here (so to speak :-) ), but
should my system be hanging like this? I may well have got the port
address wrong - would that cause this sort of problem?
What would be the best way forward from here? Should I try to explore my
DOS setup further - in which case, is there a convenient diagnostic tool I
could use?
[BTW, I am aware that there doesn't seem to be any OCR software around ...
but I'll tackle one problem at a time :-).]
TIA,
Nikhil.
