Adaptec 2940UW with PC architecture?

I have obtained an Adaptec 2940UW for use with a Pentium Pro system.
However, on receiving this board, I found that it is supposed to be
for use with a Mac only. On the other hand, people appear (from various
messages) to be using this board with Linux.
Will it run with a PC architecture, or should I try to get a replacement?
(I hesitate to power it up for fear of destroying something, if it is truly
incompatible.)
