We are an ISP running Linux. I wrote in this mailing-list about timebomb
recently. We have mysterious hangs, where you can only switch the
consoles, not type anything. You can't ping, you can't telnet, not
anything. We are now running 1.2.10, and are switching to 1.2.11(I'm
rebooting next time there aren't a user logged on).

Now, we have several computers with high network load. One computer
serving as a newsserver, receiving about 50Mb/day. Another serves as our
NFS-server, and that results in a LOT of traffic. We have most of our
vital data on our NFS-server, including /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow (NIS
didn't work, it hanged). All of them are running 3com cards. Now, these
computer DOES NOT hang ever. The one that hangs is the one users are
logging into. Now, we are running dynamic SLIP on this computer, allowing
up to 16 SLIP users(sl0,sl1...sl15). This is the only thing that differs
that is in the kernel(which could hang the system).

Now, is there any condition in the slip code that could case such a
freeze? That you can switch consoles but nothing more, not even a ping.

I have ordered a SMC Ultra 16 card, reported to work here, to test, but
the other computers does not hang as said....please someone, give me a
tip, or look at the SLIP code if you could find some race condition
somewhere.
