I have heard before of a struggle (by some people) to get netdate working
with a Slackware distribution. I think what they found was that the inetd
distributed with their Slackware (don't know what version) did not support
those protocols.
When they substituted another version of inetd it all worked without problem.
So, it may be you need to update the inetd on your server.
