Of course modems like the (vapor) ZyXEL will be driven like a normal
modem and don't need a special driver.

I think you have been lured by marketroids.
A connection to a standard parallel port gives more overhead in the PC
than a 16550A connection.
Enhanced ports could do better, but you need to have one.
(don't think parallel means faster. ethernet runs at a much higher speed
and is serial as well)

You can use these programs on a /dev/ttyS port and it should work.
/dev/lp1 will not work as it is.
