newbie ethernet question (if your feeling helpfull please read)

I've read over the ethernet-HOWTO (no help unless i'm trying to program my
3c507)
and i've read over the NET2-HOWTO (very long winded and not to the point)
could someone sum up in a single paragraph what files i need to get and
install to talk
to the outside I.P. world on a 386 with a 3com 3c507 in it? (i installed
disk sets A,D & N slackware)
