Hi.
I had an idea. But I haven't seen it implemented anywhere yet. But the
idea is simple and elegant. So I think there is somewhere a catch in the
idea that I'm not aware of. Does anybody know what the catch might be ?
The idea : People want to have their computer accessible under a fixed name
(e.g. USER.ISP.COM) from the outside when they dial-in via SLIP/PPP.
Say your login name for your isp (ISP.COM) is "USER". Then if your ISP
has it's own nameserver, it can add an entry into it's nameserver anytime
you log in (your dynamic IP address would then be assigned as name
USER.ISP.COM in the nameserver) and remove the entry when you log off. You
would publicly advertise your machine address as "USER.ISP.COM" and it
would either exist (when you are logged in) or not.
(Q: Can the entry be advertised as "0.0.0.0" when you are not logged in ?)
The "USER" entry would be configured so that it doesn't propagate to
higher nameservers, so that it doesn't cause confusion (since there are
delays in the propagation).
The prerequisition number one is that your ISP does have its own
nameserver for its domain. The prerequisition number two is, of course,
that your ISP is willing to do the above described procedure every time
you log in via SLIP/PPP.
Question : can the above procedure work technical-wise ?
Question 2: can that be done at here are UW ?
(e.g. my entry would be something like "jvichere@cn-ts.uwaterloo.ca")
Thanx,
Jan
