Way to much text deleted (sorry). To anyone reading this thread:

Forget WInGate, forget proxy server, forget all the other things 
mentiond here. IPMasquerading works wounders. I have used it to set
up up to 25 computers on a LAN with 2 segments. Thay all shared Internet
access using one 28.8 modem. (Not very heavy users, your right).

There is a FAQ and a HOWTO (the howto is about 3 weeks old) and
a mailing list.
