How do you compile?

I'm a newbee to linux. Usually I use borland C++, and MS-dos, Win 3.11
#1) I am trying to get Kermit 190 compiled -- During the make session it
spits out all sorts of error messages.
#2) I am trying to get Mosaic WWW browser up and running from
the source. -- Once again all sorts of error messages.

I suspect the problem is missing includes and/or libraries for both.
Could someone hold my hand and and walk me through a linux compile?
