RMS wrote emacs. He gave away the source. Gosling took the source and
started selling Gosling emacs. RMS wrote the GPL to prevent this.

You have your history rather wrong here. Gosling's Emacs was written
completely separately from anything Stallman had written. It came years
*before* GNU Emacs, being only loosely based on ITS/TOPS-20 Emacs and TOPS-10
FINE.
