Take a look into Serial-HOWTO. There is a discussion about the difference
between 8250 and 16550.
Generally the 16550 is recommended because it generates much less
interrupts. You have to use it if you want more than 38000 bps.
The ppp setup is explained in the Network Administration Guide NAG from
the Linux Documentation Project (NDP).
