Hmmm. Could it be you are running an SMC Elite with the Ultra xxx690xx
chip ?  Our experience is that these cards are known to give trouble on
certain hardware combinations under Dos (yech !) and Windoze (ditto). 

I've been running .83 since Jan 16 on a SMC Elite 16 combo using the
xxx790x chip. Witin our organisation there are at least another 2 boxes
running Linux, one on .76 with an identical card, the other also on .83
but with an SMC Elite 16 TE, all on 486DX2/66, 16 Mb, etc, and in our
experience Donald has done a great job.
