You read it correctly. I know it is not a good idea (lower ethernet
performance).
My problem:
My machine can't talk reliably to another host on the internet.
The connexion hang anytime the server send me a larger block of info.
Here is a telnet session with one host about 15 hops from me.
486dos:~ $ telnet mtl.net
Trying 204.19.119.1...
Connected to mtl.net.
Escape character is '^]'.

Linux 1.2.13. (POSIX).
You have mail.
terminal1:~$ ls
Mail/ htt.tar.gz modif.tar xterm/
eql-1.2.tar.gz mail/ mtl.tar.gz
terminal1:~$ ls
Mail/ htt.tar.gz modif.tar xterm/
eql-1.2.tar.gz mail/ mtl.tar.gz
(I can do as much ls or any command with a small output)
(As soon as I do)
terminal1:~$ ls -l
The connexion hang forever. Just the connexion though. Both the
server and my workstation continue to operate normally. I
kill the telnet (^] quit) and life goes on.
I can replicate this problem with about any host on the internet.
My setup:
Internet
---------------------------
isdn link
|
My provider running 1.3.91
--------------------------
ppp 2.2.0e on both side
mtu 296
|
rem.solucorp.qc.ca
My gateway running 1.3.90
--------------------------
ethernet network
|
486dos.solucorp.qc.ca
My workstation running 1.3.90
Some tests I have done:
the gateway has no problem to talk to anyone.
my workstation has problem.
Whenever I do "ifconfig eth0 mtu 296" on the workstation,
all goes well.
After changing the MTU of my isp to 1500, all is also fine.
This is a new problem. I suspect the problem is not related to the newer
kernel. I have backup to 1.3.72 with out success both on the gateway and
the workstation. I perfectly remember that this has always works fine.
I suspect the problem is upstream (One router somewhere). Anyone has seen
this before. Maybe related to path mtu ?
I can supply more info if needed.
