As an addition to this discussion, I should point folks to my web page,

You'll find pointers to SAMBA, CAP, and netatalk, as well as HylaFAX, 
which offers network FAX services for both these platforms (but yes, I 
know the MacFlex page has no information -- I'm working on it...).
