immediate return.  No delay.  I guess I could assume that the config files 
are okay then since there is no problem.

I still have the delay, I believe the best solution is due to the Slakeware 
3.0 version of named.  See the following:

Well I bet you got a resolver problem, just try out a:

nslookup <local_system>

and look how much time it needs to resolve the adress. In this case,
you4ll know you made something wrong in your Config scripts ;)
