Err, I'm quite new to linux too, so please forgive me if I make any
mistakes.. I don't know either if I should respond via private email,
or on this mailing list (?)
okay, at the campus we have a token ring network, and it's fully supported
starting from linux version 1.3.24. Well, not every token ring card will
work : the "token ring adapter" and "token ring adaptes II" will work, but
we never managed to get any "token ring 4/16 adapter" to work.
installing a token ring adapter is quite simple with linux, we have much
less compatibility problems than with it than with windoze or msdos.
here we even install linux via the token ring network, and it works great.
the simplest way is to set the jumpers so that the adress space for the
adapter is located at CC00 (it's the default setting). then you must setup
your cmos so that there will be no cache nor shadows enabled between CC00
and D400. then, the card should run without problems.
the only compatibility problem I'm aware with 4Mb token ring adapters, is
with recent pentium computers. if you have a P133, it's likely that you
will have to use an older model of token ring adapter, you'll find the date
of the chipset on the biggest chip of the board (it's the tropic chipset)
if it's 1989, it's fine. if it's 1992, it probably won't work with a P133.
another info, just to let you know :
the TR driver for linux was developped in a belgium university, but now
they don't support this anymore. then we used it at our university, but
first it didn't supported source routing correctly, so it was unable to
pass the bridges. someone in our university, named Pascal ANDRE, made a
patch for this, and it's integrated in linux since version 1.3.24
Someone reported a success with token ring 4/16 adapters, but I'm not
aware of the details. here we don't manage to get a sh*t out of this
cards :((( does anyone has any information about this ???
