The 3c509 is not as super as 3com wants you to believe (in their ads).
It has only a small receive buffer and will therefore lose packets when
you don't react quickly to interrupts.
It even has some feature to deliver the interrupt earlier than the completion
of the packet, to gain some time. 3com calls it "predictive"...
