We use ppp and let mgetty answer to the incoming call on a linux box
with linux-1.3.45, ppp-2.2c, mgetty-0.98 ...

We have the effect that a corrupted line whithin a ppp-session (any
serial session with the modem, ppp is only an example) freezes the
linux-box until one manually switches off and on the external modem
(allmost all the lights are on). The linux box reacts on absolutely
nothing. The last it does is that there is a syslog message on input
overrun on the modems-line ... After the manual intervention business
is as usual, regardless how long this freeze lasts (typically over the
night ..8-12 hours).

We have the well know no name modem with the rockwell chip (:-)... and
the box has a harddisk which does not allow to interrupt io operation a
la "hdparm" (it is an old mfm controller ..). The linux box is made of
very second hand hardware, it serves as our private internet provider
and nothing else...

Is this freeze a known effect for anybody on the list? Sorry this is no
real ppp problem but i suppose that on this list are a lot of serial
experts ....?

PS: Normal operation is very satisfactory now ... Real fast ...
