I'm not Donald Becker, but my understanding is that the 3c509 requires
low interrupt latency or it drops packets.
The usual culprit for bad interrupt latency on Linux is running IDE hard
disks with interrupts off, which is the default for a good reason--the
opposite can be dangerous with old disks.
